The XXIII International Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry, Physics and Biology (XXIII QSCP) was hosted by UNIVEN and held in Mopani Camp, Kruger National Park, 23 – 29 September 2018. Prof. Liliana Mammino, who had brought this conference to South Africa, was the conference Chairperson.
L-R: Prof Lilliana Mammino, Prof Jan Crafford and Dr Eric Maluta at the conference Gala Dinner.
QSCPs are prestigious series of conferences dealing with all the aspects of the study of quantum systems, including Concepts and methods in quantum chemistry; Relativistic effects in quantum chemistry; Molecular structure, dynamics and spectroscopy; Reactive collisions and chemical reaction; Complexes and clusters, surfaces and interfaces, catalysis; Molecular and nano-materials; Computational chemistry, physics and biology. By bringing together researchers from different areas, these conferences actively favour interdisciplinarity. Furthermore, they favour interactions and exchanges between emerging and experienced researchers.
Dr. Bernard Nthambeleni, Executive Director Grants Management and Systems Administration, National Research Foundation (NRF) was the guest speaker at the opening ceremony. He underlined the importance of research in frontier areas and of corresponding centres of excellence. The Vice-Chancellor and Principal (Acting), Prof. Jan Crafford, represented UNIVEN at the gala dinner. The gala dinner in which Prof Crafford took part, has a particularly important role in the QSCP conferences because it includes the ceremony of the awards of the Centre de Mechanique Ondulatoire Appliqué (CMOA) prizes to promising young researchers.
The conference was attended by specialists from several countries, including Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK, and the USA.
The proceedings of the conference will be published as a volume of the series Progress in Theoretical Chemistry and Physics, published by Springer.
