Ms. Mmaphuti Mamaleka who is attached to the Department of Social Work as a Lecturer is offered a training opportunity at University College of Leuven/Limburg (UCLL) in Belgium. The training takes three weeks and Ms. Mamaleka will be leaving South Africa on 14 March and returning on 02 April 2020. Ms. Mamaleka competed for the VLIR-UOS scholarship that is managed by the Faculty of Social Work based in Leuven. The fund supports the International Training Programme for several institutions around the globe. The 2020 theme of the scholarship reads; “Empowering Vulnerable Children and Young People (EVCYP) (interdisciplinary perspective)”. The training programme entails issues relating to vulnerable children and youth considering the following key aspects:
- • Children’s rights (in terms of violence, protection and safety),
- • Neurological impact and restore approach which focuses on infant mental health,
- • Intercountry adoption and foster care: social and ethical reflections,
- • Care methodology -theory and practice,
- • Consequences of interdisciplinary approach, research and article writing,
- • Discussing future Collaboration.
The scholarship is only offered for four countries: South Africa, Peru, Ecuador and Uganda. In South Africa, only two universities have been offered the scholarship for this training and they are, University of Venda (UNIVEN) and University of the North West (NWU). Four candidates come from NWU and Ms. Mamaleka is the only one who won the scholarship and to represent UNIVEN in Belgium. The university of Venda feels very proud of Ms. Mamaleka’s achievement.
