The University of Venda (UNIVEN) prides itself as an institution that promotes governance for out-standing scholarship through its management system value chain. This University is also commit-ted to good corporate governance.
On Wednesday, 10 July 2024, the University, through the Risk Management Unit, organised an online seminar to commemorate International Whistleblowers’ Day. This Webinar took place on Microsoft Teams, and it was overwhelmingly attended by more than 144 participants. The guest speakers for the webinar were the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Bernard Nthambeleni and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Management, Commerce, and Law, Prof Barwa Kanyane.
The aim of the webinar was to commemorate World Whistleblowers Day which is observed annually on 23rd June. Through this webinar, the Risk Management Unit intended to raise awareness about the importance of responsible whistleblowing and protection of whistleblowers. The awareness was important in promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical behaviour within the University community while recognising whistleblowers as the role-players in exposing corruption and unethical behaviour.
The webinar further reassured the potential whistleblowers and university community about the protection that the university would provide to whistleblowers against possible victimisation. The bravery and determination of the whistleblowers who speak up and report fraud, corruption and wrongdoing will be recognised as a positive impact that strengthens the integrity of the University.
The University is determined to treat every day as a day of empathy for whistleblowers and to promote the culture of reporting fraud, corruption and any illegal activities taking place within the University.
University Management encourages the university community and stakeholders to play a meaningful role in rooting out any identified form of fraud, corruption and wrongdoing.
As the programme director, Mrs Diana Makwarela conveyed a message of appreciation to staff members who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the World Whistleblowers Day webinar.
