In a groundbreaking initiative towards sustainable energy solutions, the University of Venda (UNIVEN), through the Green Technology Confucius Institute (GTCI), is set to equip 20 young individuals with cutting-edge skills in Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Technology. The opening ceremony of the transformative training programme, scheduled from 03-14 March 2025, took place at the 15 SAI Bn Vuwani Base between those days as part of the “Near Zero Energy Building (NZEB)Summer School: Building Energy Audit and Photovoltaic Energy Systems Retrofitting.
This initiative comes at a time when the world is grappling with climate change, energy insecurity, and unemployment, particularly among young people. Through the GTCI providing specialised training in solar PV technology, UNIVEN is not only contributing to South Africa’s Just Energy Transition but also empowering the next generation of green energy innovators and entrepreneurs.
Driving Renewable Energy Solutions
The Near Zero Energy Building Summer School focuses on practical solutions to reduce energy consumption and integrate renewable energy technologies into existing infrastructure. As part of the programme, participants will undergo intensive hands-on training in building energy audits and photovoltaic energy systems retrofitting, equipping them with industry-relevant expertise to address energy efficiency challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UNIVEN, Prof Bernard Nthambeleni, emphasised the University of Venda’s commitment to sustainability, research, and community engagement. Prof Nthambeleni highlighted the university’s efforts in advancing green technology education and implement-ing practical energy solutions. He said a major milestone is the training of 20 young graduates and five military personnel in energy auditing and photovoltaic system retrofitting, culminating in the installation of a 9-kW peak solar system at the 15 SAI Battalion. “This initiative aligns with UNIVEN’s strategic plan to position itself as a leader in renewable energy research while addressing rural energy challenges and unemployment,” stressed Prof Nthambeleni.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal also reaffirmed the university’s dedication to fostering partner-ships with government entities, communities, and industry stakeholders to drive sustainable development. He said the establishment of a 5-megawatt solar plant at the University of Venda campus to supply energy to nearby villages and businesses showcases this long-term vision. Furthermore, as he concluded, Vice Chancellor and Principal mentioned that GTCI serves as a hub for knowl-edge transfer, promoting green technology skills and innovation. Prof Nthambeleni’s speech un-derscored UNIVEN’s role in shaping a zero-carbon future, equipping students with essential skills, and reinforcing the university’s impact in tackling energy security and climate change challenges.
