Dr Mpho Tshikororo, Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agri-Business at the University of Venda, recently participated in the prestigious 9th BRICS Young Scientist Forum held from 25-29 November 2024 in Sochi, Russia. His selection to participate was part of a coordinated effort between the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). Dr Tshikororo was among eleven young scientists chosen to represent South Africa in this prominent event.

The BRICS Young Scientist Forum is a key initiative that fosters the development of innovative thinkers who are poised to make significant contributions in their respective fields. It provides an invaluable platform for young scientists to engage with their peers from other BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas, and establishing international networks that can drive global progress in science and innovation.

This year’s forum focused on four major thematic areas: Nature-like and Convergent Technologies as drivers for a sustainable future, Environmental and Climate Technologies, Digital Humanities, and Artificial Intelligence. Dr Tshikororo presented a research project under the Environmental and Climate Technologies theme, which explored Coping Mechanisms for Climate-driven Food Systems Disruptions. His work is critically important as climate change increasingly impacts food security, particularly in developing countries.

Dr Tshikororo expressed his deep appreciation to ASSAF and DSI for providing him with the opportunity to take part in such a prestigious forum. He emphasised that this experience has been career-defining, offering new perspectives and collaborations with fellow scientists. He also extended his gratitude to the University of Venda’s management, led by Prof Bernard Nthambeleni, and the Executive Dean of Science, Engineering, and Agriculture, Prof Natasha Potgieter, for their steadfast support and guidance.

Participation in the BRICS Young Scientist Forum is an important milestone for Dr Tshikororo and a testament to his commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation. His involvement not only enriches his academic career but also contributes to the growing body of knowledge that aims to address the global challenges of climate change and food security.
