For the first time, a South African irrigation structure has been honoured with the prestigious World Heritage Irrigation Structures (WHIS) Award, an achievement recognised since the award’s inception in 2012. Professor Mpandeli, UNIVEN alumnus, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Venda and Chairperson of the South African National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (SANCID), received this award during the 75th International Executive Council meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) held in Sydney, Australia, from September 1-7, 2024. The accolade was awarded for the Douglas Weir System in the Northern Cape, which has been in operation for 134 years.
The recognition highlights the significance of the Douglas Weir in sustainable water management and irrigation practices, showcasing its historical and operational value. Professor Mpandeli’s application for the WHIS Award, submitted in February 2024, detailed the structure’s design, construction, and water management capabilities.
This achievement marks a milestone not just for Professor Mpandeli and SANCID, but for South Africa as a whole, as it brings global attention to the country’s rich heritage in irrigation infrastructure. The WHIS Award aims to elevate the profile of historical irrigation structures worldwide, promoting community empowerment and sustainable practices in water management.
Prof Bernard Nthambeleni, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Venda expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Prof Mpandeli for receiving the prestigious World Heritage Irrigation Structures (WHIS) Award. He praised Prof Mpandeli’s dedication and expertise, highlighting the award as a significant milestone for South Africa in the global context. Prof Nthambeleni emphasised the importance of sustainable irrigation practices and expressed hope that this recognition will inspire future generations and raise awareness of the nation’s contributions to engineering and agriculture.
Congratulations once again to Prof Mpandeli and all involved in this historic recognition!
