From 12-13 April 2018, the University of Venda (Univen)’s Department of Nutrition organised assessment workshop for field Work Integrated Learning supervisors which was conducted by Centre for Higher Education Teaching and Learning (CHETL). The workshop took place at the University Library hall.
This was the first training of its kind and CHETL hopes that this can be an on-going improvement programme that could be introduced in other University departments.

According to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), it is a prerequisite that field Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) supervisors must be trained at the beginning and end of each year because supervisors are changed from time to time due to staff turnover. The primary objective of the workshop was to equip supervisors to be able to assess students who are doing Work-Integrated Learning at their organisations.
In 2017, the Department of Nutrition had a feedback meeting with field WIL supervisors from different training institutions including Primary Health Care (PHC), Provincial Districts and NGOs. This assisted in reviewing students training manual, assessment tools, identify challenges regarding supervision of students and understanding of student activities during their internship.
CHETL comes in to play because it is mandated to advance issues related to teaching and learning to both academics and students. The workshop saw CHETL enhancing WIL supervisors who are employed in different organisations that work with the Department of Nutrition.
This successful WIL workshop discussed Key Areas such as legislative framework impacting on assessment; learning outcomes and assessment criteria; understanding assessment; types of assessments; feedback in assessment, principles of quality in assessments and evaluation of WIL supervisors by students.
