On 01 September 2021, Adv Avhapfani Eric Nemukula assumed his duties as the new Director Legal Services of the University of Venda (UNIVEN). Adv Nemukula has acted as the Director Legal Services for a period of eight months at UNIVEN. He holds LLM in Labour Law from the University of Pretoria, LLB from UNIVEN and a Certificate in Higher Education Management from UNIVEN.
He expressed that he is happy to join the UNIVEN Senior Management team which is expected to ensure that the University achieves its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan. Adv Nemukula continued to say that he knows exactly what is expected of him given the fact that he acted in the position for the past eight months. According to him, his main focal points will be to ensure that the interests of UNIVEN are always legally protected, and to create a harmonious academic environment through the efficient and effective implementation of student discipline.
Adv Nemukula’s employment history includes amongst others the following: Acting Director Legal Services (UNIVEN) from January 2021 until he was appointed as the Director Legal Services and resumed duties at the beginning of September 2021,
Head Labour Relations/ Legal Services for UNIVEN from June 2014 to December 2020, Manager Legal Services for Fetakgomo Local Municipality from October 2013 to May 2014, Deputy Manager Labour and Legal Services in the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport from September 2010 to August 2013, Deputy Manager Legal Services at the Limpopo Department of Local Government and Housing from March 2008 to August 2010, Senior Employee Relations Officer in the Limpopo Department of Health from February 2007 to February 2008. Although he was initially employed by the Department of Correctional Services in February 1996 as a Correctional Officer, he was appointed as Labour Relations and Legal Officer from October 2004 to January 2007. Adv Nemukula has also just been appointed as the Chairperson of Transversal Committee which is responsible for the review of all UNIVEN institutional policies.
“Looking back from where I am coming from has made me realise that this was not an easy road travelled, however this became possible through commitment and hard work”, said Adv Nemukula. I am committed to ensure that the Directorate of Legal Services is compatible with all legal instruments, including the Constitution of the Republic. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor and Principal including the UNIVEN Executive Management team for believing in him and entrusted him with this role.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Bernard Nthambeleni congratulated Adv Nemukula and urged the University community to give Adv Nemukula the necessary support in his new role as Director Legal Services.
