About 15 305 learners from 180 Schools from Vhembe District benefited during the 2017 annual careers exhibition that was recently hosted by the University of Venda (Univen) in the Auditorium.

Forty (40) exhibitors from different institutions of higher learning were present to provide information regarding the programmes that they have and to also guide learners about making career choices throughout the week. These institutions had impressed school educators and learners who were seeking information about different institutions. They also saved time and a lot of money for parents and schools from taking their learners to every institution. Learners were also taught on how to apply for admission for 2018 academic year.
John Makhubele was happy that his grade 12 learners were encouraged to study at their level best in order to meet the needed requirements for tertiary enrolment.
Educators expressed their happiness regarding the well planned career exhibition hosted by Univen as it gave a lot of relevant and needy information to them and learners. A grade 12 Life Sciences Educator at Madonsi High school, Malamulele East, Mr John Makhubele said: “I am excited because now I know that my learners will be able to apply in time.” Mr Makhubele further said that gathering necessary information will also help us as educators because it encourages our learners to study hard in order to obtain the results that would allow them entry in their respective fields of study. He further said that his learners gathered a lot of information including the documents to be attached to the application forms.
Hlamalani Chauke, an Educator at Mbhanyele Secondary school also expressed herself about how the career exhibition helped learners regarding the application process. Ms Chauke said that the career exhibition was informative, “it gave learners a broad understanding of application process, what programmes are available at various institutions of higher learning,” she said.

Univen’s Assistant Schools Liaisons Officer, Mr Justice Lebopa gave his views regarding some of the challenges experienced by exhibitors. Mr Lebopa said that the most challenging and confusing feeling is coming across a learner who is not yet sure of what career paths to pursue when they come to the careers exhibition. “Some of the learners are still not sure of what they want to do after completing their matric while others want to enroll in programmes that do not match with the subjects they are doing in grade 12. But we try by all means to guide them and help them to think around what they want to become and it seemed to be working out perfectly”, he said.
Election Maluleke is one of the learners who benefited from the 2017 Univen Careers exhibition.
A graded 12 learner, Election Malukele from Nghezimani High school said: “I am interested in Media Studies but I did not know the necessary requirements for the
programme. I now have valuable information that will help me when applying and I also got the application forms from different institutions.”

Wendy Ngobese, a grade 12 learner from Amukelani Secondary school, said that she has learnt a lot during the 2017 Univen Careers exhibition. She also expressed that, “now I have application forms from almost all institutions present here and I will start to apply as from today.” She said this career exhibition helped her a lot because now she knows the entry requirements for her fields of interest.”
