Following the University transformation into a Comprehensive Institution in 2010 in terms of the Department of Education directive, the department of Accounting and
Auditing at university of Venda is mandated to offer academic and career-focused general degrees, certificates and short courses in accounting and related disciplines mainly to promote entrepreneurial, rural and regional development in Southern Africa.
In line with the University and School of Management Science vision, the Department of Accounting and Auditing aims to be a centre of excellence for tertiary accounting education for rural and regional development in Southern Africa.
Mission
The Department of Accounting and Auditing strives to offer a range of quality academic and career-focused programmes in accounting and other related disciplines aimed at promoting entrepreneurial, rural and regional development in all sectors of the economy through applicable and appropriate methodologies, research and community engagement .
Community Engagement Activities
The department makes a positive contribution to the University and Vhembe district local community at large in a variety of ways. These include volunteering for participating in local councils, schools and University community engagement committees. The department is currently developing a program to offer workshops and practical training on financial literacy to SMMEs/Cooperatives in Vhembe District in Limpopo Province.
Similar activities have been undertaken at individual levels in the past. However, in line with current university policy on community engagement, projects or activities like these must be officially registered.

Currently the department offers four qualifications:
- To be admitted to any programme of study, a National School Certificate applicant must have a minimum achievement rating of 3(40%) in English.
- To be admitted to an undergraduate degree programme , the applicant must have an NSC, with minimum achievement rating 4 or above (50% or above) in four recognized NSC 20 credit subjects with School and programme specific requirements as follows:
NB: Candidates who do not meet the minimum admission requirements for Masters and Doctoral degrees may be considered by the Faculty Research Committee for admission through recognition of prior learning (RPL), including assessment for readiness using tools such submission and presentation of a concept paper, an interview by a selection panel constituted by Departmental Research Committee. Candidates will be declared competent based on the provisions of the RPL policy of UNIVEN.
UNDERGRADUTE PROGRAMMES
BACHELOR DEGREES
- BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (ACCOUNTING) – BCOACR/MSBBCA
The four subjects for admission must include Mathematics with an achievement level of at least 4 (50 – 59%).
- BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (COST AND MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING) – BCOMCM/MSBCMA
The four subjects for admission must include Mathematics or Accounting with an achievement level of at least 4 (50 – 59%).
- *BACHELOR OF COMMERCE IN ACCOUNTING SCIENCES – BCOACS/MSBCAS
NSC 35 + adequate achievement level in English and at least 55% pass in Maths if student does not have Matric Accounting; OR at least 50% pass in Maths if student has done/passed Accounting with at least 60% in Matric.
*This degree programme is accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
HONOURS DEGREES
In addition to local content, the materials used are partly based on the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to allow students flexibility to register with other accounting professional bodies if they want to in addition to pursuing their honours degree qualification. The qualifications and their respective admission requirements are as stated below:
Bachelor of Commerce Honours (Financial Accounting)
BCom ( Accounting) or an equivalent approved degree in Accounting, with an average pass mark of 60% in External Financial Reporting (ACC3541/ACC3141) and Managerial Accounting and Finance (ACC3641/ACC3241) or equivalent thereof.
Bachelor of Commerce Honours ( Cost and Management Accounting)
BCom ( Cost and Management Accounting) or an equivalent approved degree in Accounting, with an average pass mark of 60% in Techniques and Applications (ACC3542/ACC3142) and Costing and Control (ACC3642/ACC3242).
MASTERS DEGREES
MASTERS DEGREES
- Candidates will be admitted into the Master’s Degree if they obtained the Honours, or a professional four-year degree with at least 65% or an equivalent status conferred on them by Senate and have satisfied Senate as to their proficiency in such field of study.
- The Potential candidate should have the following: A relevant Honours degree in one of these fields: Accounting and Cost and management Accounting with an average of at least 60%.
- An applicant who has obtained a degree at another university must apply for status recognition subject to the prescribed conditions.
- The minimum duration of study will be one academic year (fulltime).
- No student may exceed a maximum of THREE years fulltime to complete any Master’s degree.
DOCTORAL DEGREES
The degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting and Finance are offered.

- A relevant Master’s degree or its equivalent with an average of 60% is required for admission to the study for the Doctor’s degree.
- A student who has obtained a Master’s degree at another university or any other accredited institution must apply for status recognition subject to the prescribed conditions.
- The minimum duration of study will be two academic years (fulltime).
- No student may exceed a maximum of FIVE years to complete any Doctoral degree.
