Professor Tshisikhawe, a distinguished figure in the Department of Biological Scienc-es, has been elected to the SAAB Council for a promising 2-year term. This signifi-cant development not only positions the University of Venda’s botanists for enhanced networking, but also ignites excitement for the potential of more collaborations with other plant scientists, shaping the future of botanical research at our university.
The South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) is established to advance funda-mental knowledge and innovation in the Botanical/Plant Sciences and related research disciplines for the benefit of people and the environment, and to perform such func-tions as may be desirable for attaining these objectives. Therefore, the association has several activities, including but not limited to an annual congress and an inter-national botanical journal (the South African Journal of Botany), which is published annually at regular intervals. SAAB members are led by a Council of ten members, of whom eight are elected from among the SAAB members; one member is nominat-ed as a representative of the South African National Biodiversity (SANBI), and the Council appoints the Honorary Treasurer. The SAAB Council members run the af-fairs of the association subject to the Rules of the Constitution and in conformity with the By-laws. Therefore, the Association’s management of the affairs is vested in the Council, which meets from time to time. Membership to the Council is for two years.

The Executive Dean of Science, Engineering and Agriculture, Prof Natasha Potgieter, is very proud of Prof Tshisikhawe and his leadership in his niche area, as well as the impor-tance of this appointment to the research and development of young botanists from UNIVEN.
