As we bask in the glow of another graduation season at the University of Venda, amidst the sea of heartwarming stories, one narrative shine brighter than the rest. It is the story of Tsumbedzo Hazel Muruba, a remarkable mother of two whose journey to academic success is nothing short of inspirational. Hazel’s path to graduation day was marked by resilience, determination, and unwavering faith. Raised in humble beginnings, she faced financial constraints that forced her to forgo tertiary education after completing secondary school.
Instead, she rolled up her sleeves and entered the workforce to support her family, embodying the essence of selflessness and sacrifice. Hazel worked for Sun International for many years. Undeterred by the challenges she faced, Hazel refused to settle for mediocrity. Fueled by a burning desire for knowledge and a relentless spirit, she embarked on a journey of self-improvement. She did courses in Public Relations and Computer Studies with IQ Academy in Pretoria. Hazel demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her educational
pursuits when she registered for a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase at the University of Venda, but Hazel’s journey did not stop there. Driven by her passion for education, she continued to reach new heights, enrolling in an Honours programme in Curriculum Studies and now pursuing a master’s degree in the same field. Each milestone she
achieved served as a testament to her resilience and determination, proving that with perseverance and faith, anything is possible. What makes Hazel’s story even more remarkable is that she is not alone in her journey. Alongside her stands her beloved son, Naene Magadani who managed to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Biokinetics degree, and he is furthering his studies towards Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health, as they both prepare to walk across the stage on graduation day. Together, they embody the power of familial support and shared aspirations, inspiring each other to reach for the stars.

In Hazel’s own words, “Even as a single mother, you can still make it in life. Just put your faith in God, because with Him, anything is possible” (Matthew 19:26). Her story serves as a beacon of hope for all those who come from less favorable backgrounds, reminding us that where we start in life is not where we end up. As we celebrate Hazel’s remarkable achievement and that of her loved ones, let us be inspired by her unwavering determination, resilience, and faith. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and the indomitable human spirit. Congratulations Hazel and your son Naene. May your story continue to inspire generations to come.
