The University of Venda’s Vuwani Science Resource Centre under the Faculty of Science Engineering and Agriculture has been nominated for the NSTF-South 32 awards. The Nomination/s for Vuwani Science Resource Centre were received for consideration for a 2021/2022 NSTFSouth32 Award. After the adjudication process has been completed and Vuwani Science Resource Centre nomination was considered along with others by an independent Adjudication Panel in recognition of an outstanding contribution to Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) and Innovation. The category is under Communication Award for outreach and creating awareness (by a team or individual over the last 5 years).
Dr Nnditshedzeni Eric Maluta, co-ordinator and team leader for the Vuwani Science Resource Centre and member of the Council of South Africa Institute of Physics (SAIP) and Commission 14: International Commission on Physics Education member under the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), will be representing Vuwani Science Resource Centre as a nominee for the NSTF-Communication Award for an exceptional contribution to the sharing and promotion of knowledge in science, technology, engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Awards Gala Event will be held at The Houghton Hotel, Houghton Estate, Johannesburg on Thursday, 21 July 2022 from 16h30.
Dr Maluta always had passion about science awareness. He mentioned that they want learners to get excited about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and to continue to follow careers in science and related field in the institution of higher learning. “These learners are future scientists who will assist in solving global water, energy, food, and health challenges.”
Vuwani Science Resource Centre is unique on its science communication, engagement and awareness as the centre is right in the middle of rural community. The goal of the programme is to stimulate interest and understanding in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with both outreach and in-house training for learners. The centre also provides people with access to education around basic computer literacy, providing training for three months and assisting them in getting employment.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Venda, Dr Bernard Nthambeleni wished Dr Maluta the best of luck for this incredible news.
