As part of BestMed Medical Aid Scheme’s commitment to partnering with the University of Venda (UNIVEN) on its journey to optimal health this year, BestMed Medical Aid delivered Tempo Breast Friends Informational Talk on Wednesday, 06 October 2021. The health talk took place on Microsoft Teams organised by the Employee Health and Wellness Unit under UNIVEN’s Human Resources Department.
The purpose of this talk was to combat fear of self-checks and empowering men and women in coping with breast related matters. Ms Kretzschmar emphasised the importance of self-checks for men and women. She highlighted the issue of managing a diagnosis and treatment in the event of cancer. Traci indicated that there is a need to support ourselves and others through the cancer journey. She further brought the element of researching about the conditions that people find themselves in and finding their purpose in life. “The fact that this condition can be diagnosed and treated, shows that you are not the only person who has been through this experience.”
In terms of overcoming adversity, participants were advised to live life to the fullest and not feel guilty as if they are dying tomorrow. She said the condition that they are faced with, should not be seen as a burden to other people. “Most people become stressed when they find out that they have cancer forgetting that they can still live quality of life.
Ms Kretzschmar advised participants to eat balanced diet and take their treatment the right way.
In conclusion, Ms Traci Kretzschmar thanked the University for affording them the opportunity to share with the employees about breast cancer which is an enemy of both men and women.
