About the Department

The Department of Biokinetics, Recreation, and Sport Science (DBRSS), formally known as the Centre for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science (CBRSS) is the youngest establishment in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Venda, Thohoyandou, South Africa. The department was established in 2002 and started functioning in 2003 offerings programmes in Human Movement Sciences (HMS). We offer four years’ professional degree qualifications in Biokinetics, Recreation and Leisure Studies and Sport and Exercise Science. The Department graduated its first cohort of graduates in 2007 for students who completed their training in 2006. The student enrolment has progressively increased since 2003. The Department boasts of excellent records of success, throughput, and graduation rates. The introduction of the Problem-Based Learning methodology, integrated with Community-Based Learning has further added impetus to the academic performance and success of the students.

In line with the University mandate to convert to Comprehensive University, the Department has developed one professional, career-focused programme – the one-year Advanced Diploma in Sport Management which admitted first cohort 2018. During the next 5-year plan, the Department plans to offer the Master’s degree in Biokinetics, Master’s degree in Sport Science and Master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure studies. The Centre also plans to develop a Ph.D. programme in Human movement sciences.

Since its inception and apart from the academic responsibilities, the Department has been engaged in research, community services and outreach programmes/projects, organising workshops and seminars, assessing national and provincial athletes for various levels of competitions, and conducting health and wellness promotion programmes. The activities promote the broader intellectually and culturally enriching roles of university education. We are looking forward to seeing you in UNIVEN!

    The Department of Biokinetics, Recreation, and Sport science trains students to be capable of continuing learning and develop intellectually after graduation and take up major responsibilities of professional and personal development as Biokineticists/ Certified Leisure Practitioners/ Sport Science Specialists and Providers of appropriate cost-effective services to communities in South Africa.

BSc in Biokinetics
The minimum entry requirement shall be Matric with exemption and Biology E (HG), Physical Science E (HG) and English E (SG). National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Bachelors’ degree and adequate achievement* in Life Sciences, English and Physical Sciences.

NB: Candidates will be subjected to selection screening criteria as prescribed by Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA).

The minimum entry requirement shall be Matric with exemption and Biology E (HG), Physical Science E (HG) and English E (SG). National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Bachelors’ degree and adequate achievement* in Life Sciences, English and Physical Sciences

Advanced Diploma in Sport Management
The following shall be the requirements for this programme:

–       National Senior Certificate with Bachelor’s degree/Matric certificate with exemption

–       BSc/BA degree (in any field)

–       BSc/BA (Hons)  (in any field)

–       Certificate in Sport Coaching and Sport Management (for RPL consideration)

–       Diploma (in any field)

–       Higher degree (in anyfield)

Or,

RPL consideration: candidates must have a National Senior Certificate with Bachelor/Matric certificate with exemption and at least 5 years working experience with sports bodies/athletes, sports federations, sports organizations, sports clubs, sports agencies, sports departments, or show evidence of sport involvement or participation. The duration of the programme is one year.

Community Engagement
The Centre for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science is working with various communities and departments regarding community engagement. Students are exposed to practical work in communities in the Limpopo province. The students are placed at the following sites; Limpopo Sport confederations in Polokwane, Department of Correctional Services, Matatshe Prison, Thulamela Municipality, Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Polokwane, Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mpumalanga, Limpopo Academy of Sport (LAS), Capricorn District, Sekhukhune District, Waterberg District, Lowmed performance centre in Nelspruit, Tshilidzini Special School, Biokinetics private practices in Nelspruit and Barberton, Primary Health care centres in Vhembe district, University of Venda Biokinetics clinic to promote health and wellness among communities and institutions surrounding UNIVEN.
